Visit The Brindisi Red Castle

Sitting on the small island of Sant Andrea that faces the northern part of Brindisi's historic port, the Red Castle dates back to the 16th century. It served as a defensive fortification, protecting the old harbour entrance.

Better known as the Forte a Mare, or sea fort, the castle affords amazing views over the port and Adriatic Sea from its many towers and battlements. Called Castello Rosso because of the colour of its stonework, the Red Castle has its origins in an earlier construction that dates back to 1491 and King Ferdinand I of Naples. It was originally built to defend Brindisi against attacks by the Turks and thus Christianity against Islam. The castle grounds also contain a manor house that is built along similar lines to the castle. It is only open for visits by the public with permission of the Navy.

Brindisi harbour and the island of Sant Andrea are well worth exploring. Known as the Gateway to the East since antiquity, Brindisi was once an important port, used by the Romans for their troop movements across the Adriatic, and later as a trading port for the Venetians. The harbour is also home to the Sailors Monument, which offers 360 degree views across the harbour, its many bars, cafes and restaurants and ferry movements to Greece and the Balkans.

The Red Castle also overlooks the new marina, which lies between the castle and the Costa Morena dam.
