The Puglia region of Southern Italy holds many cultural treasures, and is home to some of Italy's loveliest villages and towns. Located some 50 kilometers north-west of Brindisi, on the way to Bari, lies the historic town of Cisternino. The town sits in the center of the Trulli region, so called after the distinct architecture so typical for the Puglia region: white-washed houses, often round, that are topped with cone-shaped, tall roofs.

Cisternino was founded by Greek settlers, but later became the town of Sturnium in ancient Roman times. Cisternino flourished in the Middle Ages and the town center still boasts many fine examples from Cisternino's medieval boom. Here one can get lost in winding alleyways that lead to mysterious little courtyards through archways that seem to have sprung up over night.

One enters Cisternino's historic city center via Torre Civica's archway, which opens up onto Piazza Vittorio Emanuele. One of the finest religious monuments from the Middle Ages is the Church of San Nicola, which dates back to the 13th century. San Nicola is the town's patron saint and the church occupies space previously held by an even older Greek Orthodox monastery.

Also located in the medieval center are several beautiful mansions and palaces. Palazzo Vescovile and Palazzo Amato are fine examples of late Renaissance architecture, the former dating back to 1560.

Other historic towns within an hour's drive of Brindisi are Locorotondo, Martina Franca and Alberobello, which is home to a UNESCO World Heritage archaeological dig site.
