In the heart of Lecce lies the Piazza Sant'Oronzo, the city's main square, which marks the end of the ancient Roman Via Appia, which runs through the south of Italy. The Palazzo del Sedile, a lovely Church of San Marco, which was begun in 1543. It used to serve Lecce's Venetian community as a place of worship.

At the end of the Via Appia stand the excavated remains of a Roman amphitheater dating back to the second century. It was discovered in 1929, along with many marble statues that once graced the stage. Although parts of the amphitheater are covered by later buildings, the seating tiers and part of the original marble mosaic floors are open to the public. The amphitheater is often used for cultural events. Back in ancient Roman days, the theater was capable of seating some 25,000 spectators. Some of the smaller finds discovered during excavations are now on display at the Museo Storico della Città di Lecce, which is housed in the former monastery of Santa Chiara. The museum is located on Via degli Ammirati, which is near the Piazza del Duomo.

Overlooking the one of the most important squares, the Piazza del Duomo, is Lecce's beautiful cathedral with its impressive tapered bell tower, but the Bishop's Palace, the Palazzo Vescovile, is also situated at the Piazza. Its facade is richly decorated with carvings around the windows.

Just a short walk up the hill of Corso Vittorio Emanuele II stands the lovely Church of Sant' Irene, which was built in 1591. It is home to one of Lecce's largest altars.
