Throughout the year the Puglia region offers visitors festivals and exciting fairs. In autumn the town of Ceglie Messapica, which is also within easy driving distance of Brindisi, holds the Giovedi Settembre festival. This "September Thursday" event has its origins in harvest festivals, and there is still plenty of country dancing and traditional food and drink to showcase Puglia's distinct culture to this day. The original purpose of the Giovedi Settembre is to empty out the old wine barrels so that the latest harvest can find room for the new wine. Ceglia Messapica's restaurants have an excellent reputation and attract many foodies throughout the year who come to sample traditional fare.
