Brindisi city center is only an 11-minute drive away along the Via Provinciale S. Vito. Exploring the ancient town is best done on foot, and there are plenty of car parking places that allow tourists to stroll through Brindisi for a few hours, before heading off into the Itria Valley.

Lecce is only ca. 40 minutes away, Ostuni even closer. The charming town lies only 8 kilometers inland from the coast and has been a human settlement since prehistoric times. Surrounded by olive trees and vineyards, Ostuni clusters around a medieval hilltop castle that perches about 300 meters above sea level. Only ruins remain, but the views from the castle are truly splendid. In the 16th century Ostuni was surrounded by fortified walls into which four tours and gates were inserted for added security against the Turks who were occupying the Balkans at that point. These towers are still part of Ostuni today, for example the Pozella and Villanova towers or the Porta San Demetrio, one of only two remaining medieval gates.

Ostuni is also worth a sightseeing trip on account of its lovely Cathedral and Bishop's Palace, but there are also several noteworthy mansions and palazzi that once houses local aristocratic families. The Civic Museum and Archaeological Park answers many questions through the finds they display.

Outside of Ostuni lies the fortified estate-farm of San Domenico. Once held by the Knights of Malta, the estate is a perfect example of what such large domiciles looked like and how important they were to Ostuni's economy. The Santuario di Sant' Oronzo complex lies to the north-west of the town and is especially interesting for its triumphal arch.
