Some 18-km distance from Brindisi lies the town of Mesagne. It sits in the heart of the Salentinian flatland along the Appian Way. Mesagne boasts its own castle, built by Teutonic knights towards the end of the 12th century. Inside visitors will find the Museum Granafei, which exhibits many archaeological finds from the region. The castle was home to the powerful Giovanni Antonio Orsini del Balzo family from the 16th century onward. The family made many alterations to the castle that are still in evidence today.

Close to the castle, overlooking Piazza Orsini del Balzo, is the Baroque-style Church of Sant'anna, which dates back to the 17th century. Its facade is richly decorated with statues and the church also boasts its own impressive bell tower.

Porta Grande was originally part of the town's walled fortifications that were built by the Orsini family. Another reason to visit Mesagne is the Messapic village of Muro Tenente, which is located some 5 km distance for Mesagne town center. The village contains an important necropolis.

Mesagne is the Puglia region's fifth most populous town and remains important economically. One of the other treasures in the town is the 14th century Basilica del Carmine, a not-to-be-missed church in the heart of town.
