A little further afield, to the west-north-west of Bari, Puglia's capital, lies the seaport Trani. Already an important trading port in ancient Roman times, Trani flourished in the Middle Ages, in the 11th century, when it became an episcopal see after Canosa had been destroyed by Arabs. Such was Trani's importance to the Adriatic trade, Emperor Frederick II ordered a huge castle and fortified walls to be built. The city walls are no longer in evidence, but the castle has been restored and now serves as a museum. Some parts of Trani city center also remain as they were in the Middle Ages.

Trani Cathedral was built in honour of Saint Nicholas the Pilgrim, who died in Trani in 1094 when he stopped off in the town on his way to Rome. Completed in 1143, the beautiful Cathedral was constructed of Puglia's characteristic pale limestone.

Today serving as a seminary, the Gothic Palace of the Doges of Venice is located near Trani's port. Examples of Romanesque architecture can be seen all over the Old Town, in particular the churches of San Francesco and San Giacomo, which both have Romanesque facades.

The city of Bari has a very different feel about it. Some of Bari's districts are ultra-modern, while others speak of a long history. Bari Cathedral was built in honour of Saint Sabino of Canosa. Originally begun in a Byzantine style in 1034, the Cathedral was destroyed when Bari was sacked in 1156. Between 1170 and 1178, locals began to rebuild their Cathedral, using the church of Saint Nicholas as their inspiration. Only the original pavement in the transept remains of the earlier building. Relics of San Sabinus are housed in the crypt.

Bari is also a great place to come for shopping and dining. The modern Murat district serves as the main shopping district of Bari.
