The coastal town of Otranto lies in the municipality of Lecce and is within an easy driving distance of Brindisi. Otranto offers tourists many cultural attractions, including its own 15th-century castle and an 11th-century Cathedral with ornate mosaic floors. Castello Aragonese was rebuilt by Alphonso II of Naples in the late 15th century. A moat surrounds the castle, which in its original form had a single entrance that was only accessible via a drawbridge.

Otranto's magnificent cathedral was consecrated in 1088 and boasts a wonderful rose window and side portal that dates to the late 15th century. The Cathedral's intricate mosaic floor dates to 1166. Also well worth a visit is the Church of San Pietro, which boasts beautiful Byzantine frescoes.

The town of Otranto lends its name to the Strait of Otranto, which divides the Adriatic from the Ionian Sea and marks the natural border between Italy and Albania.

Outside the town there are two beautiful lakes, Alimini Grande, which is a salt-water lake, and Alimini Piccolo, which gets its fresh water from a spring. It's a great place to come for a walk, if you enjoy nature.

Some 5 kilometers south-east of Otranto stands the lighthouse Palascia, marking the most easterly point of Italy's mainland. If you want to enjoy sweeping views across the sea, try Torre Matta, which guards Otranto's old harbour.
