Located on the coast, about 50 kilometers north-west of Brindisi, lies the charming farming community of Cisternino. The small town is still surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, just as it was in ancient Roman times. Often cited as one of southern Italy's loveliest "white" towns, Cisternino was originally founded by Greek settlers, then became the ancient Roman town of Sturnium. After being destroyed by Hannibal during his southern Italian campaign, Sturnium became Cisternino in the 800s, when a group of monks built a Greek Orthodox monastery and the town gained in importance with pilgrims. During the Middle Ages, the town grew considerably in importance, as evidenced by the historic center. Here white-washed houses were erected as and when needed – it's a veritable maze of courtyards and archways, narrow cobbled streets and secret piazzas. Town planning simply didn't exist.

Cisternino's medieval heart is preserved to this day, its houses with their ornate balconies and staircases filled with flowerpots still more Greek in style than Italian. Perhaps most noteworthy among the fine examples of architecture is the 13th century Church of San Nicola, the patron saint of Cisternino. It still occupies the site of the former Greek Orthodox monastery. Palazzo Amato in the town center was once home to local nobles. The mansion boasts a round tower and beautiful arcaded balcony.

Wine lovers usually head to Locorotondo, another "trulli" town the Itria Valley is famous for. Locorotondo's locally produced wine is available in bars and restaurants throughout Puglia and is similar in taste to the famous Spumante white sparkling wine. The historic town occupies a lofty hilltop position, and is surrounded by vineyards and examples of traditional round houses with conical roofs. Locorotondo is within a short drive of Brindisi and a charming place to visit on a day trip with car rental. Its historic centre dates back to the early Middle Ages.

The Romanesque Chiesa della Madonna Greca was built in the 12th and 13th centuries and is a fine example of the local glass-painter's art: the church boasts a beautiful central rose window. The town's two patron saints, Saint George (San Giorgio) and Saint Roch (San Rocco) also have churches dedicated to them, as well as festivals. In April the life of San Giorgio is celebrated with an extensive market fair. San Rocco has his special day on 16th August, when the "la Diana" festival takes place. Expect street music, dancing and lots of fireworks!
