Sitting atop a hill, the town of Ostuni is within a 30-minute drive of Brindisi. Ostuni's white-washed houses and narrow cobbled streets are more reminiscent of Greece than Italy, but that's no coincidence. Greece is just 45 nautical miles across the Strait of Otrando and the Adriatic, and the Puglia region bares many traces of early Greek settlers coming to southern Italy in antiquity. Renown for being one of the stars of the traditional trulli architecture – white-washed squat homes topped with tall conical roofs – Ostuni boasts its own Civic Museum and Archaeological Park, which houses many local finds. The most important of them is Ostuni One, the skeleton of a woman who lived in Puglia during the Paleolithic era.
Ostuni's cathedral is a blend of Romanesque, Gothic and Byzantine building styles, displaying in one building when the town had its heyday. There are also two remaining medieval gates, of which the Porta San Demetrio is the more imposing of the two. Be sure to visit the Santuario di Sant' Oronzo, which lies to the north-west of Ostuni and boasts an impressive triumphal arch among its architectural gems. The town was once fully fortified and still has two towers, built in 1539, which were erected to protect Ostuni against Turkish attacks, when Turkey was in possession of the Balkans.
The Bishop's Palace and various mansions and palaces that once belonged to Ostuni's noble families are also highlights on a stroll through the town's historic center. Outside of the town lies the San Domenico estate, which was fortified by the Knights of Malta and was once one of several important estate-farms surrounding Ostuni.
